The most numerous version of the Mustang family was the P-51D with over 7,956 being manufactured. Powered by a single 1,590hb Packard/Merlin V-1650-7 liquid cooled 12 cylinder engine making possible a maximum speed of 448 mph. The 78th fighter Group's most colorful P-51D was assigned to their last wartime group Commander, Lt. Col. John D. Lander. His aircraft was called Big Beautiful Doll.
