Servo failed in flight Review by Pogo
The jittery servo mentioned in earlier reviews failed by locking the right elevon full up. By some miracle I was able to get the plane back on the ground in one piece but have not flown it since. I am waiting for Hitec to either fix the problems I suspect they are having with this servo and start producing it again or give up and announce that they are discontinuing it. The darn servo has been out of stock for at least six months and perhaps a year. I am giving it two stars since one of my two HS-35Ds has worked OK since the start. (Posted on 11/22/14)
Working OK now Review by Pogo
Put in another few more flights on the VQ Delta Rocket today and both servos worked flawlessly. If you have a special situation that requires really small servos with a fair amount of torque I would recommend the Hitec HS-35HDs. (In this case the servos had to be mounted parallel to the wingspan in a thin wing and I wanted a minimum hanging out in the air stream). I'm giving them five stars this time so you can average that with the two I gave them in the first review. (Posted on 6/22/14)
Preliminary review: be careful when powering these puppies up. Review by Pogo
This is a warning to all using these servos for the first time. Read the instructions and don't connect any push rods to these servos before powering them up. In fact, if you connect any output arms make sure they have 360 degrees of unobstructed rotation and don't bother screwing them down since you will have to reposition them. The first time I turned on the power, one of these servos went around like that little girl's head in The Exorcist movie. The other servo only went around about 90 degrees. Servo one then proceeded to jitter for about a minute before it settled down. The instructions say not to exceed 4.8 volts and the BEC I am using is rated at 5.0 volts like most others, but I thought I could get away with it.
Servo two has behaved well on all subsequent tests while servo one still acts like it's haunted until it eventually settles down. I bought these servos to fit a unique situation and considered myself lucky to get them since they seem to be perpetually out of stock. If I had it all to do over again I would buy their more expensive digital twin, the Hitec HS-5035 HD, (for $10.00 more apiece). HS-5035s are rated to 6.0 volts and might provide some piece of mind but they are also perpetually out of stock.
Servo one might just be a rare slip in quality control and it seems to actually be breaking in with subsequent ground testing. I will probably fly these servos but never before have I thrown so much money at a $10.00 swap meet airplane. (A VQ Delta Rocket in this case).
A further review will follow flight testing.
