DHK Wolf 4WD Buggy

RTR 1/10 Brushed Buggy w/ 2.4 GHz Radio, NiMH Battery, and Charger

The DHK Wolf 1/10th-scale buggy is a complete package that all entry-level enthusiasts can appreciate. DHK has made sure that certain areas of the buggy are durable enough for anyone. Many parts are even borrowed from bigger 1/8th-scale platforms! With large coil-over shocks, strong drive train, large drive axles, composite chassis, aluminum upper chassis plates and shock towers, the DHK Wolf is sure to withstand harsh driving conditions while allowing the driver to control the vehicle with ease.

An entry-level vehicle should be fast enough to enjoy, but not too fast where the user can't drive it. DHK understands this and provides an electronic speed control with forward and reverse, and a motor that is well-suited for learning in the DHK Wolf. Everyone can enjoy the DHK Wolf buggy with its great looks and over-sized axles. With 4WD, the DHK Wolf is able to tear up most terrain it encounters and drive through it with ease thanks to the mounted knobby tires. The large-bore coil-over shocks soak up the obstacles and jumps, and allow the DHK Wolf to take on these with ease. The shocks are also oil-filled which allows the user to tune them for different terrain and make sure the DHK Wolf buggy is adaptable to various conditions. A complete package, the DHK Wolf buggy is sure to please new hobbyists and not let them down!

First; Good job hobbypeople.net with my order and fixing the minor situation! Secondly; Great job with the wolf, DHK Hobbies! This is my son's and I first electric RC and we both love it. I recommend getting a 3200mah battery but you do run the risk of burning out the motor. if you've never tried out this hobby but are curious, I recommend you buy the dhk wolf. Its affordable and built very well. You'll noticed the quality once you run it and the great value once you research similar buggies. (Posted on 8/12/14)

This is a great deal. I was looking for a "dog toy" for my Australian Cattle Dog Lily. She loves to chase this car, and all the better when I strap on one of her stuffed animals. The car is faster than she is right out of the box. I shopped around and there is no comparison. (Posted on 6/20/14)

Excellent Value, Great Looks Review by LightRules
Rating
I'm giving this buggy (Wolf - Brushed Model) a 5-star rating because of its overall VALUE. I bought 2 of these (on sale) for my kids at xxx.xx each. At this price, it's hard to find a 1/10th scale buggy + 4WD + 2.4 GHz radio. Also, the looks of the thing is striking with the black chassis and orange suspension/shocks. It is a VERY good-looking buggy with a high quality feel.

Over the past few weeks we've played a lot with these buggies (along with a friend who also bought 1 for his kids). Here are some thoughts about the brushed version of the Wolf buggy:

+Speed: It goes pretty fast. Now this is relative, depending on what you're used to. But it can go 20 MPH, and being 1/0th scale, it looks pretty fast. If you run this thing full-speed into your ankle, it's going to hurt pretty bad. That said, it isn't a brushless, LIPO-battery running buggy, so it isn't going to blow you away. But for me, my 10 year old son, and my 8 year old daughter, it's fun to run these things outside on the grass, dirt, or concrete.

+Steering: I like how responsive the steering is. The kids are learning great hand-eye coordination just messing around with this buggy's steering. Very accurate and precise.

+Build-Quality: The Wolf has a nice heft and feel to it. It's got a mixture of hard plastic and metal/aluminum parts. But picking it up, you can feel a good heft to it. We've crashed it into sidewalks, the buggies have smashed into each other (not on purpose), flipped over on concrete, and there are still going strong. No broken parts yet (except for the STEERING SERVO - more on that below). I like the overall quality of the build and feel of this thing.

+Radio: This is a decent radio. It's 2.4 GHz frequency, so you can have 10 of these Wolfs running around and no one will be controlling anyone else's car. I also like some of the fine-tuning knobs it has, including adjusting the front wheels' camber alignment (e.g., if the car is veering left, you can make a simple turn of the knob on the radio and it will straighten up) and a speed governor (e.g., you can turn the knob counter-clockwise and hand it to a 6 year old and the car will only go 5 MPH, but you can turn it clockwise and go full blast when someone older wants to go really fast with it). Lastly, the range of the radio-to-buggy is pretty far. I haven't lost control over the car's distance yet, so I don't know just how far it can go before losing signal, but I've sent the Wolf far enough away that it looks pretty tiny in the distance before bringing it back. Overall, the radio does a good job.

+Parts Availability: Since Hobby People sells this as one of their main-stays, they usually have parts readily available for it. I bought an extra plastic body-shell for my daughter so we could paint her's purple. It cost $22 for the plastic body and a sheet of Wolf decals. Not super cheap, but ok. That said, I wish the parts were a little less costly since this is a intro-hobby grade RC car.

-Steering Servo: So we've had 2 of these things go out on us (and the other day while running with my friend's Wolf, his went out too). In all our cases, the front wheels would turn right but would grind and make all sorts of noises when we tried to turn it left. Clearly something was wrong. For our buggy, both times Hobby People put the part in under warranty. I just took it in and they did it right there on the spot. The plastic gear-tooth on the servo is cheap and can easily wear out or break. They have recommended a metal version that costs about $40 after tax. That would be 40% of what I paid for this whole buggy! So I've held off. I think there are less costly, metal-geared options out there. I'd recommend checking with a smaller local hobby store (LHS) in your area for ideas. One *possible* alternative that *might* work (according to my LHS) is the Duratrax SX-200 Metal Gear High-Torque Servo ($25). But I don't know that for sure. The next time mine goes out (and I'm expecting it to), I'll goto my LHS and give the Duratrax unit a try.

-Battery: So the Wolf comes with a 1800MAH (6-cell) NiMH battery. A full charge using the stock charger will take about 4 hours. I'd highly recommend you just pick up a 3300MAH or 4500MAH unit (we got the Hi-Energy brand ones) and a faster charger (e.g., Hobby People Activator-EZ AC/DC LiPo & NiMH Charger 50 Watt). I picked up the Hitec X4 AC Plus charger which is more expensive but can charge 4 batteries at a time. I don't know exactly how fast the HP charger will charge a 4500MAH battery (the stock charger will take 12 hours to charge the 4500MAH), but my Hitec does it in 75 minutes from empty. The 4500MAH battery gives us a long-time outside running; I'd say we get about 45 minutes to 1 hour of actual "play time" (stop, go, some full blasts, some just going slow around turns, etc.). GET HIGHER MAH BATTERIES AND A CHARGER.

So overall, we love this buggy. It's fun having 2 of them to go at it. It's brought a new dimension to "hanging out time" with my kids. If this buggy were $150-$180, I wouldn't rate it 5 stars, but for what I personally paid, it's quite a deal. I hope this review has been somewhat helpful. (Posted on 5/29/14)

1 Month Follow Up Review - A Great Brushed 1/10 Buggy for the Price Review by CobraJocky
Rating
This is a follow up review after having it in the hands a kid (grandson) for the first month. Aside from my earlier initial review stating that the manual is horrible for a "Newbee" to learn about this model, we have to say that so far this is a great 1/10 scale Brushed RTR buggy for the price ($119.95 sale). I carefully "broke in" the brushed motor using the old RC airplane method of running the motor in a glass of cold de-mineralized water on a couple full charged batteries. As yet even with a number of very hard runs in the dirt, no signs of the motor frying. When it does and I'm sure it will fry, I'll upgrade it to a Brushless motor and ESC from some good source. I'm sure many of the so-so quality power-train gears and pinions will fail as we run the buggy hard and I'll upgrade those as well.

Also, as yet we haven't had the fragile original plastic gear Steering Servo strip out, as we hear from many owners. And we'll have Mark at the Fountain Valley store update it with the Metal Gear version when the weak and fragile stock one dies prematurely.

Otherwise, I can't say we've found anything else about the Wolf Brushed version that is questionable in quality. It is a great looking buggy, handles very very well, is faster on a LiPO and the suspension is first class with being off of a 1/8th scale truck. The Wolf is HEAVY though and I'll be looking at ways to lighten it for when my Grandson is wanting to "club race".

Suggestion for Hobby People/Global: Get more "upgrade" gear, parts and motor options for this and other DHK Truggies and keep the cost of the parts low, because these are "Kids" RC level trucks and they can't afford a lot these days. (Posted on 5/28/14)

WORST USERS MANUAL I have ever seen in RC!! Review by CobraJocky
Rating
I've been in RC Aircraft and Boats for over 40 years, so I've seen lots of manuals. I bought this so-called "Beginner Hobby Level" RC Buggy for my 7-1/2 year old grandson who's been thru a half dozen lower level RC cars/buggies. Even with his meager beginnings and my years of experience, there is no way I can see anyone making any sense out of this horribly organized "User's Instruction Manual", where there is NO Information even on which are the front or back wheels for installing out of the box, let alone how to adjust toe-in or camber of the front wheels, adjust shocks, what to lubricate or not lubricate, any adjustments of any kind or even something as simple as installing the 2.4Ghz Antenna plastic tube (not mentioned anywhere in the manual)!! If I hadn't noticed that the wheels are different from the front and back (one type would rub against the steering linkage) we had them on in reverse because the "User Instruction Manual" had NO INSTRUCTIONS for putting on the wheels!! A 7, 10 or 12 year old would NEVER notice this!

Instead of having a coherent (not Chinglish) instruction for assembly, setup, adjustments, tips, actual running of the buggy in the front of the manual, this horrible mess of a manual has the fist 14 pages of parts listings, warnings and diagrams of parts and other gibberish that has nothing to do with USING THE RC BUGGY or setting it up! Finally in the last few pages there's info on how to link the Rx with the TX and enabling the ESC, but still no "running" info!

So instead of already using the DHK Wolf within hours of buying it for my Grandson, we'll have to wait for a day we can go to the local Hobby People store and take up about an hour or two of your sales staffs time to teach us what should have been in a coherent Users Instruction Manual!! Shame on Hobby People and Global for not doing their homework with the manufacturer before putting this product on the store shelves.

Oh it is a pretty model and my grandson likes it's looks, too bad we can't use it until we get a lot of questions answered and a lot of setup adjustments made at a HP store! (Posted on 4/24/14)

Ok for the price Review by TC
Rating
Bought this as a xmas present for my son. We had a lot of issues early on with the motor, servo, transmitter and all were eventually replaced either for free or minimal upgrade cost to better component due to HP knowing that there were issues with these trucks. Since then we've had to replace quite a few parts that continue to break - Front bumper seems to snap off a the bottom fairly easily - seems like a bad design there. Also as someone else pointed out the suspension being tied into the front differential is not ideal. Sheared off the plastic 'wings' and while the differential case is inexpensive the time to rebuild is quite long.

With all the trips to the store I think I've spent more on gas now than I have on the car. If I had to do it over again I think I would spend the extra money and go with Traxxas. (Posted on 2/9/14)

Fun when it runs Review by rc
Rating
This thing is fun when it runs. I wish mine would work as everyone else here says. After the third use, the motor burned. Hobby people tried to charge me for a new motor because they say the car had bump marks. Eventually, they agreed to replace the motor. second trip to the track, the shock absorber shaft broke. Decided to just buy replacement to avoid arguing with hp. Next, the female battery connector to the esc went loose. Car kept dying but it was easy fix, just inserted a screwdriver. The drive shaft bent after jumping at the track. After fixing the shaft, the steering servo was acting out. The motor kept turning with the steering in neutral position. The car is now sitting in the garage bench waiting for parts. This is definitely a hobby since I think I spend more time fixing than running it. (Posted on 1/16/14)
Great Buggy for an even better price! Review by Rick

Great little buggy especially for those just getting into the hobby. Bought the Wolf as an Xmas gift for my 4 year old. A few dogbones, a bent rear axle and broken servo gear-cheap easy fixes btw- he's now a great driver! These issues can happen on any RC. I popped in a HiTec metal 925 servo for $30 thats stronger and faster. The reason I'll give 4 instead of 5 stars- the front differential case broke where the shocks mount- aluminum mounted to plastic is not the best idea for a stress point. While the new case was only $9, it took me about an hour to change everything out.
I will say that the car burned through two motors- which Hobby People replaced under warranty. On the third motor I did a short distilled h20 break in, took off sticker to reduce heat and installed a smaller 18T pinion gear to avoid further motor burn outs. Not only does the motor stay much cooler but the buggy blasts off the line much quicker! I think the stock 21t pinion is too tall for the stock brushed motor. Combined with a 5000mah Lipo (yes the ESC accommodates Lipos)- my son usually tires of driving before the battery dies (app 40 min for us).
Overall the buggy handles great on the street, dirt and short grass- we're having a blast playing with this RC! If I had to do it over I'd get the brushless (for reliability not speed). But you simply cannot find a 4wd 1/10 rc of this quality anywhere near this price point! And Hobby people staff have been just great assisting me with any issues that have come up. Good buggy, stock battery only last 8 mins should upgrade to 4500 amp battery which cost $45.00 but will run for >20 mins on one charge, stock servo is made of plastic (it will break) should upgrade to a metal servo $12 part. Make sure all of your parts are glued or taped (dual-side) down, some of our parts were not secure to the buggy. Recommend running on concrete, asphalt, hard dirt no sand or loose dirt or low cut grass. It can handle small jumps just make sure you land on grass - long drive ways are best and most enjoyable. BE PATIENT when you first open the car if you have never owned one - this fun buggy's will test your patience. My 10 year old son can handle the car fine however I have to closely supervise my 8 year old :) Last comment, make sure from time to time you screw down your screws and your lock-nuts they will rattle loose. ENJOY! (Posted on 1/11/14)

We bought one of these for our 3 boys to share in the summer. We had to buy more batteries and a charger because they were taking the truck to the park near our house which has bike jumps and after riding home to charge battery the first day, we went back to hobby people for spares. The hours the boys have spent playing with this truck have kept them out of the house and outside. We just bought 2 more trucks today, so the boys can each play with them at the park. I am going to buy a 4th for Christmas for my husband. If you want to keep your kids outside and away from video games, these are perfect for you. (Posted on 10/31/13)

took 2 wolfs, and 2 stampedes and a rustler camping along with 6 adults and 14 kids. We had over 25 packs and we needed every one of them. great fun. the 4wd handled much better than the 2 wd, and the wolfs are still ready to go. Need to get a clear body to paint so we can distinguish between the 2 wolfs when driving. (Posted on 10/24/13)
super buggy Review by Jon Reynolds

My son has the brushed and I have the brushless. They are great. So far, in 3 months we have only broken the arms on the brushless, and the body on the brushed. too many rolls on the street tore the body to shreds. They are fast, and fun. My son and I are spending more time together, and unfortunately with it getting dark earlier, we are having to race them on our street at night instead of going to park. Great buggy. Michael, we stock all the parts. If the axles broke without crashing, we would have given you a new axle at no cost. Our engineers redesigned the axles for greater strength. Matt

bought this a week ago and I am blown away at this buggy. Its fast, strong, and a 4x4. i definitely loved the price, and I would buy it again for the quality. My friend is racing the rustler, and my wolf handles better and looks better. im going to put in a castle bl system and then it will be ballistic. (Posted on 9/2/13)

bought the wolf and the razr from fv last week for my 2 boys, and they are incredible. These are our 1st non toy rc, so we have no experience, but we love them. Very fast, and they handle the crashes better than any truck we have owned. I'm going to get myself either the wolf or the razr this weekend. They are really that good. (Posted on 2/6/13)
