The brainchild of Chief Engineer John Z. DeLorean and promotional manager Jim Wagners, the 1964 Pontiac GTO was GM’s practical answer to the short coming of the early ‘60’s era Super Stock By using a less aggressive big block V8 in a lighter intermediate body, the automaker had achieved almost the same horsepower to weight ratio, and equivalent acceleration, while retaining smooth driving and decent fuel economy. One enthusiasts magazine clocked a TriPower GTO from 0 to 100mph, then back to a dead stop in an incredible 19.4 seconds. Only a Ferrari could match this kind of performance in 1964, which is why Pontiac adopted the Italian manufacturer’s moniker “Gran Turismo Omalgamato.” The GTO also featured a recalibrated suspension for improved cornering and high speed stability. This Monogram 2’ n1 kit offers options as well; an additional hood cut out for dual 4-barrerl carburetors and velocity stacks, raked suspension and Centerline wheels and radial tires for a modified street machine version. You monogram model presents a fin replica of one of the most popular American nameplates in history.

Conceived and constructed in total secrecy, the 1964 Pontiac GTO is considered the first true "muscle car" by many auto aficionados. The prototype was so confidential that none of the head honchos at GM® knew it even existed. At first, sales expectations were so low that production was limited to only 5,000 models. However, the GTO was such a success that Pontiac sold 32,450 units in the car's first year.
