Revell 1/48 TBF Avenger Torpedo Bomber
Take out targets with amazing accuracy.
In World War II the classic naval battle changed forever. The aircraft became the deadly weapon rather than the big gun. During the war the workhorse of the U.S. Navy was the TBF Avenger torpedo bomber. It was produced in greater numbers than any other torpedo bomber. It was powered by an R-2600 Wright Cyclone engine producing 1600 horsepower and could push the Avenger to 300 mph. While the Avenger was piloted by many great heroes in World War II, the most famous was the 41st President of the U.S. George H. W. Bush. In a mission over the Chichi Island, future President Bush was shot down, but managed to drop his torpedo before bailing out. He was part of a normal 3 man crew including the pilot, rear gunner and bombardier/belly gunner. The TBF also could carry a large payload of either a 2,000 lbs. torpedo, four 500 lbs. bombs or an extra fuel tank.
Within months of its introduction, the TBF Avenger's mettle was tested in the Battle of Midway. Five of the first six aircraft were lost in that historic battle, but the Avenger quickly evolved into an indispensable asset for the U.S. Navy. Kit features a rotating rear ball turret with gunner figure, opening bomb bay doors, a torpedo, folding wings, retractable landing gear and decals for two versions: 1. TBF-1, VT-51, U.S.S. San Jacinto (CVL-30), Pilot Lt. George H.W. Bush and 2. TBM-1, U.S.S. Mission Bay, CVE-59, October 1943.
