- Flew Great - Then Motor Mount Broke Review by Dutch
A club member asked me to do a low speed photo pass and I did. Then he asked me to turn it around and do another photo pass in the opposite direction.
When I throttled it up a bit to do a 180 degree turn, all hell broke loose! The airplane suddenly pitched down and then it had no power. I was able to maneuver it around some trees, but then I lost all control of it as it was settling down to the ground.
As I approached the airplane, I was downwind of it and could smell that characteristic burned electronic equipment smell.
The motor mount had apparently partially failed before the low speed photo pass and, if you zoomed in on the picture that was taken, you could see that the prop arc was pointed down instead of straight ahead.
When I throttled up, the motor mount must have failed completely and the prop and motor were only attached to the airplane by the motor’s three wires, which twisted up and probably shorted out the motor, which, in turn, burned up the speed control. The BEC in the speed control held on for a while before it quit too and the receiver lost power.
